The Department of Environmental Protection has approved the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority's plan to remove soil from a nearby site and use it as cover material at the authority's Frey Farm Landfill in Manor Township.

"After a technical review, we have concluded that the authority's plan will not pose any significant environmental impacts in the immediate area and will provide the authority with quality soil that will help ensure municipal waste is disposed of properly," said DEP South-central Regional Director Rachel Diamond.

The approved borrow area consists of a 112-acre site formerly known as the Barley Farm. When the borrow area is closed in two years, approximately 70 acres will be preserved as open space.

DEP approved the environmental assessment for the borrow area plan in March. The local citizens group that monitors activities at the landfill previously approved the project. The landfill is currently in compliance with all applicable waste regulations.
