HARRISBURG -- The Department of Environmental Protection has approved the first phase in its evaluation of the proposed Sandy Run Landfill expansion in Broad Top Township, Bedford County.
By approving the environmental assessment, DEP now moves to the technical review phase in its evaluation of the project that would expand the landfill by 22.3 acres and extend its life expectancy by nearly 10 years.

In March 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a proposed rule for mandatory greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting from large GHG emissions sources in the United States. Pennsylvania Governor Edward Rendell has signed a bill to establish a fund supporting renewable energy and energy conservation programs for the Commonwealth. Though its been a struggle to fund an energy program for the Commonwealth, Pennsylvania now joins a growing number of states to initiate a comprehensive energy program. The path to approval of this energy fund has taken some time, beginning with the announcement of Rendell's Energy Independence Strategy in January 2007. Rendell has indicated that he will be working through the summer "to reach an agreement with the legislature on measures that will improve" what he called "the state’s flawed energy policies." The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) has finalized modifications to Pennsylvania's short list of compounds that must be analyzed in order to obtain an Act 2 waiver of liability
