Description:
This is the site of a former dry cleaning operation located northeast of Philadelphia . As a result of historic operations at the site, chlorinated solvents were released into soils and groundwater at the site. In response to these releases, ARM has completed or is currently completing the following tasks:
- Investigation and sampling of soils, groundwater, surface water, and sediments at and near the site;
- Installation of soil borings and groundwater monitoring wells;
- Completed a feasibility study for the remediation of impacted soils and groundwater at the site;
- Interface with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) to ensure consistency with PADEP requirements;
- Design and implementation of an in-situ chemical oxidation treatment process.
Following an initial investigation and over ten years of ineffective groundwater pump and treat system operation by others, ARM was retained to complete a supplemental remedial investigation of soils and groundwater at this former dry cleaning site. This investigation included the installation of 20 soil borings and 3 monitoring wells, as well as the collection of surface water and sediment samples from a nearby stream and stormwater drainage system.
ARM then completed a feasibility study to evaluate various remedial alternatives, including natural attenuation, soil excavation and removal, pump and treat, in-situ biodegradation, and in-situ chemical oxidation. ARM subsequently conducted treatability studies for the in-situ treatment techniques, and groundwater modeling to assess the potential migration and fate of contamination in groundwater. A sensitive receptor survey and ecological risk assessment was also completed to identify potential human and ecological receptors of concern.
Based on the results of the studies, ARM designed and implemented a chemical oxidation treatment process. Following treatment, groundwater and surface water quality were monitored, and concentrations were significantly reduced. ARM completed an Act 2 Final Report to demonstrate attainment of the site-specific standard, and this report was approved in early 2005.
