Lackawanna Energy Center | Geotechnical & Geophysical Investigations for Natural Gas Power
JESSUP, PENNSYLVANIA
ARM Group prepared the initial and supplemental geotechnical and geophysical investigations for a 1,485-megawatt natural gas power plant. The plant comprises three power islands, each consisting of a single-shaft combined cycle configuration. Each power island has a GE 7HA gas turbine and a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG). The energy center has the capacity to power more than one million homes.
Following completion of the field programs, ARM Group worked with the project team to develop appropriate site development programs to account for challenging site conditions. These conditions included stockpiles, stripping pits and other impacts from past surface mining as well as impacts from past deep mining. Mitigation of surface mining included the use of dynamic compaction to densify the upper soils below the power plant. Mitigation of the deeper mines included a mine remediation program to provide for a subsidence resistant design.
During construction ARM Group provided oversight for site construction activities, including general earthwork, concrete testing, MSE wall construction, dynamic compaction, rock cuts, filling of mine voids, and removal of previous sanitary waste. ARM also reviewed cut rock stability to ensure worker safety.
Construction for all three units was completed ahead of schedule.
