Restoring Stability: Pipeline Replacement & Streambank Rehabilitation
Pipeline Geohazard Mitigation: ARM Group Stabilizes Streambanks and Replaces Exposed Natural Gas Line
A 6-inch steel natural gas pipeline became exposed in a stream due to continuous erosion, posing a risk to infrastructure integrity and environmental stability. To solve the problem, ARM Group assisted with the design and permitting for the replacement of a 115-foot section of the pipeline, reinforcing the nearby streambanks, which had started to erode and collapse. The team used advanced geotechnical engineering, ensured environmental compliance, and implemented infrastructure protection strategies to create a durable, long-term solution.

Why Erosion Control and Pipeline Protection Matters
When nature starts to wear away at infrastructure, just swapping out a damaged section isn’t always the answer. Here, erosion didn’t just expose the pipeline – it also weakened the streambanks, making future failures a real possibility. By combining pipeline replacement with strategic slope stabilization, this project protects both energy infrastructure and the surrounding environment, preventing further degradation and ensuring regulatory compliance.
Client Benefits: Long-Term Pipeline Integrity and Environmental Compliance
ARM Group was able to tackle infrastructure challenges for our clients by focusing on:
- Long-term infrastructure stability by addressing both immediate and future risks.
- Minimized environmental impact through data-driven geotechnical engineering and regulatory expertise.
- Compliance with state environmental regulations, streamlining the permitting process for sensitive areas.
Engineering Approach: Geotechnical Stabilization and Streambank Reinforcement
ARM Group implemented a multi-faceted engineering approach to resolve both the pipeline exposure and streambank failures, including:
- Advanced Geotechnical Analysis – Soil sampling, laboratory testing, electrical resistivity (ER), and seismic geophysical methods provided a comprehensive understanding of subsurface conditions, allowing for a tailored stabilization approach that minimized environmental impact while ensuring structural integrity.
- Streambank Stabilization – Engineered solutions were designed to prevent further erosion and support long-term resilience, ensuring the new pipeline remains protected.
- Regulatory & Environmental Compliance – ARM Group developed a detailed Erosion and Sediment Control Plan and managed state environmental permitting applications to navigate the regulatory complexities of working within a sensitive stream environment.
